The M6 through the North West

The M6 crosses the Mersey and the Manchester Ship Canal on the Thelwall Viaduct, east of Warrington. It meets the M56 near Lymm and the M62 at the Croft interchange. It then runs north past Winwick, Haydock and Ashton-in-Makerfield to Wigan, and meets the M58 at Orrell.

This is one of the busiest stretches of motorway in the country. It carries long-distance traffic between the Midlands, Scotland and the ports, so a breakdown here is often far from the driver's home.

We cover the towns along it: Warrington and St Helens and Haydock.

What to do if you break down on a motorway

Leave the motorway at the next junction or services if you can.

If you cannot, pull on to the hard shoulder or into an emergency area and stop as far to the left as possible. Switch on your hazard lights. Leave the vehicle by the left-hand doors and wait behind the barrier, well away from the traffic. Do not try to repair the vehicle yourself.

Some stretches of motorway have no hard shoulder. On those, aim for an emergency area, which is marked with blue signs and an orange SOS telephone symbol.

If you are stuck in a live lane and cannot get out safely, stay in the vehicle with your seat belt and hazard lights on, and call 999.

If the police or National Highways traffic officers attend, follow their instructions.

Broken down far from home

We can take your vehicle to a local garage, or to your home address elsewhere in the UK. Long-distance delivery is part of our nationwide vehicle transport service. Tell dispatch the destination when you call.

Questions

What should I tell dispatch from the motorway?

The motorway, the direction you were travelling, the last junction you passed and the number on the nearest marker post if you can read it safely. Also give the registration and what has gone wrong.

Can you take my car home if I live outside the North West?

Yes. Vehicle transport is nationwide and fully insured. Tell dispatch the destination when you call, so it is included in the price.

Do you cover the Thelwall Viaduct?

Yes. Get to a safe place behind the barrier first, then call dispatch with the direction you were travelling.
