The M57

The M57 is Liverpool's outer ring motorway. It runs from the M62 at the Tarbock interchange north past Prescot, Knowsley and Kirkby to Switch Island near Aintree.

It carries commuter traffic and heavy goods traffic to the port. We cover the towns along it: Huyton, Kirkby and Knowsley and Bootle.

What to do if you break down on a motorway

Leave the motorway at the next junction or services if you can.

If you cannot, pull on to the hard shoulder or into an emergency area and stop as far to the left as possible. Switch on your hazard lights. Leave the vehicle by the left-hand doors and wait behind the barrier, well away from the traffic. Do not try to repair the vehicle yourself.

Some stretches of motorway have no hard shoulder. On those, aim for an emergency area, which is marked with blue signs and an orange SOS telephone symbol.

If you are stuck in a live lane and cannot get out safely, stay in the vehicle with your seat belt and hazard lights on, and call 999.

If the police or National Highways traffic officers attend, follow their instructions.

The M58

The M58 runs from Switch Island east past Maghull, Bickerstaffe and Skelmersdale to the M6 at Orrell, near Wigan.

It is a quieter motorway that crosses open country, with long gaps between junctions. Tell dispatch the last junction you passed so we approach from the right side. See also Southport and Ormskirk.

Questions

What should I tell dispatch from the motorway?

The motorway, the direction you were travelling, the last junction you passed and the number on the nearest marker post if you can read it safely. Also give the registration and what has gone wrong.

Can you recover from Switch Island?

Yes. Get to a safe place away from the traffic first, then call dispatch with the road you were on and the direction you were travelling.

Do you cover the whole M58 to the M6?

Yes. We cover the M58 from Switch Island to Orrell.
